The Yo-yo is a universal toy loved by all generations. There is even a yearly world contest where competitors are judged for the difficulty and beauty of their yo-yo performance.
Akihabara, as the place in Tokyo known for hobby shops, has a store that specializes in yo-yo and educational toys.
SPIN GEAR
SPIN GEAR is located on the 3rd floor of AKIBA Cultures ZONE, only three minutes from JR Akihabara. After climbing the escalators to the 3rd floor go straight and turn right at the end of the passage.
It is a bit hidden among the stores on the right, but you should easily recognize it for a bunch of yo-yos showcased in front.
Inside, shelves are stuffed with yo-yos and educational toys.
Their selection of imported toys is also quite impressive including most popular toys and some less known gems from around the world.
For lesser-known games, there are clear instructions with pictures placed behind.
This is the kendama corner. Kendama stores are very few and it can be difficult to find a store with this large selection. Yet they are a lot of fun and are just challenging enough for small kids to enjoy them as well.
Here some more exclusive kendama made out of wood. There are more expensive than the plastic ones but are perfect for a souvenir.
In the middle of the store, there is a space for yo-yo. If you are not sure which to buy, the staff will let you try out a few. However, you can also play here after buying one.
You can ask the staff to show you some cool yo-yo tricks if the store is not busy at the moment.
This is the corner for educational toys, such as Rubik’s Cube, with samples that you can try out.
If these toys sound a bit too expensive, SPIN GEAR has a unique yo-yo gacha-pon next to the entrance where you can get one for a little bit of money.
