Taiyaki Sweets in Akihabara! Try out These Three Stores!

Taiyaki is a type of Japanese traditional sweets – snapper shaped pancakes with red bean paste filling. As some of you may remember, there was a huge taiyaki boom a while ago. They are so popular that staff always looks so busy preparing overflowing orders on their taiyaki machines.

This is all thanks to a popular anime called Kanon. The scene, where a character named Tsukimiya Aya is walking down a snowy road and eating takoyaki makes it looks so good and drives many anime fans to try this tasty looking sweet. The popularity of taiyaki suddenly exploded when this taiyaki-inspired video was uploaded online and went viral.

There are many good taiyaki shops in Akihabara. We will introduce you the top three. If you come to Akihabara, please try them out and compare the tastes.

The first store we will introduce you is Naruto Taiyaki Honpo. This store is popular for the great taste, reasonable prices and its natural taiyaki. Also, it is unique because the staff rotates after every taiyaki order. Bean paste is well mashed while the pancake part is thin and crunchy. We were surprised to see taiyaki had a perfect snapper shape!

The crispiness goes away when they get cold, so we recommend you eat them hot.

Are these wings? They are too big!

The next one is Taiyaki Kanda Daruma Suehiro-cho, located close to Suehiro-cho station. This store is popular for its satisfying portion sizes. The other reason why there are always people lining up is their takoyaki with wings. These wings are huge and fish skin is extremely fluffy.

The wings are thin and crispy while the body is doughy. These taiyaki may look thin but, one is big enough to satisfy you. (We recommend you eat the crust first.)

The last store is Kurikoan Akihabara located close to Mansei Bridge. If you want to try many different flavors of taiyaki this is the place for you. It is perfect for foreigners who are not fond of the peculiar anko taste. Here you can find many familiar flavors, like sweet potato and strawberry.

A while ago, they collaborated with Pokemon studio and introduced Magikarp, which is still a great hit. It is not snapper-shaped but it is sold as tai(snapper)yaki. But the way, Magikarp is a bit more expensive than a regular taiyaki. However, it sure makes a great Instagram photo!

You are not paying only for looks because it is very thick and will probably make you full. While you are there, don’t forget to try their special Magikarp pancake, too.

Kaiyaki is always served hot. If you are going to walk and eat, be careful not to burn your tongue. Also, don’t forget to bring a drink because the pancake part is quite sticky and can get stuck in your throat.
