Experience Japanese Game Culture in Akihabara!

Akihabara is known as a gaming battlefield. If you get a chance to visit Akihabara, you have to go to a game center. We selected three game centers to introduce you: one for those who want to play newest games, one for all retro game lovers and one for those who just want to have fun in Akihabara.

It is only three 3minutes walk from Denkigai exit of Akihabara JR station. You can’t miss the prominent red building with a blue logo. The store is always crowded because of their various claw games.

The inside of the building is very light and easy to figure out even for foreigners. The most popular attractions are photo booths (purikura) set up on the 3rd floor. You can rent a costume for merely 500jpy and take an amazing photo to remember your trip by, which is why the 3rd floor is the most popular with foreign tourists.

Super Potato for Retro game enthusiasts!

This store is hugely popular among retro game fans. They sell retro games on the 3rd and 4th floor while the game center is located on the 5th floor.

However, this is not a usual game center where you can play trending games. They only offer retro games from the 80s, 90s, and 00s. The place is not only fun but affordable, too. You need to play only 100jpy to play! If you are curious about the history of gaming in Japan, we recommend you visit Super Potato.

TAITO STATION AKIHABARA – Just look for a large Invader!

This game center is recognizable by its white Invader on a pure red background. It is managed by Taito – a video game developer, which is why here you can find all the newest games they publish.

The purikura corner is set up in the basement, crane games are on 1st and 2nd floor, and video games are on floors 3〜6. The layout is simple and easy to figure out even without Japanese, judging by the overwhelming number of foreign customers. It also is a good place for beginners because game controls are pretty simple so you can easily enjoy playing games.

Challenge yourself in the battlefield of game centers!

It is not an overstatement to say that Japanese gaming culture developed in game centers and Akihabara is like a game center battlefield. If you visit one of them, you will get overwhelmed by a feeling of nostalgia even without playing games.
