When traveling to a foreign country, WiFi is a necessity for almost everyone. Yes, travelers can get by with guide books and paper maps but they’re heavy to carry around and don’t tell you how to get from spot A to spot B like Google Maps.
The internet is also the fastest method for getting live information (ie. train schedules) while on the go.
Relying on free WiFi spots for directions is inconvenient as you can get even more lost so you can find a nearby hotspot. Luckily, you can get a pocket WiFi quite easily in Japan. Here are two WiFi rental stores in Akihabara.
WiFi Chanel Akihabara
WiFi Chanel Akihabara is a WiFi rental shop located only 30 seconds from JR Akihabara station. It doesn’t require a full-year contract, cancelation fee nor deposit and it is still reasonably priced.
Also, you can get a WiFi the same day or make a reservation on their homepage or by phone which will speed up the process.
Since it is the closest rental shop to the station, it is highly unlikely you will get lost before getting access to Google Maps.

- Unlimited Pocket WiFi (Softbank): 500JPY per day, or 8000JPY per 30days.
With unlimited data plans, usually, there is a daily data limit. However, his plan comes with no daily limits which means that the internet won`t slow down to a crawl no matter how much data you use (and no extra charge!).

Internet Packages
The basic plan is Softbank`s “Standard 20GB” which includes 20GB for one month. It costs 350JPY per day, or for 5850 for a full month. The second most popular is “Premium 50GB” which has more data and higher internet speed. It costs 490JPY per day, or for 7350 for a full month. There are a few more options, the largest being 100GB package great for uploading or downloading work-related files.
