Did you know there was the official Mobile Suit Gundam cafe in Akihabara? Who would know that among cat and maid cafes, there would be a futuristic cafe dedicated to robots?
There are only two Gundam cafes, one in Akihabara and one in Odaiba.
The interior is decorated in great detail in order not to disappoint even the biggest fans.
What is Gundam?
Gundam is a greatly popular Japanese anime which has been popular for decades. In 2019, it will be 40 years since Gundam first appeared on TV.
This human drama is set during a war where soldiers fight using huge robots called Mobile Suits.
Gundam was also made into a series with every season introducing new characters and more advanced Mobile Suits. If you haven’t yet, please check it out.
Where is Gundam cafe?
It is just outside of Electric Town exit, next to AKB48 cafe. You will easily recognize it even from far away.
There are characters’ famous quotes written on the windows. However, they are all in Japanese.
Let’s go inside.
The waiters are dressed as Gundam characters. It really feels like entering a fantasy world.
The interior is closely modeled after The Earth Federation Forces’ White Base.
The cafe is also decorated with numerous figures and signatures of voice actors and the director himself, Yoshiyuki Tomino.
On the counter, there is Gundam mascot Haro.
The menu is even better!
For example, you can get seasonal Haro pasta that looks like the mascot or Atmospheric Reentry pizza with the mobile suit made of cheese on top of it. The names are very telling of the effort that goes into the food.
For coffee, they strictly use Jaburo coffee from South America. That is because Jaburo is a region where the Federation military headquarters underground complex is located in the anime.
If you are an anime fan, you definitely won’t regret visiting Gundam cafe.
